Wise County Committee on Aging --Meals On Wheels Wise County

mission statement

Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for Wise County’s older adults by:

  • Identifying their needs and creating programs that meet those needs.

  • Offering the knowledge, tools, and opportunities to promote mental, social and physical well-being.

  • Advocating for relevant programs and services in our community.

  • Serving as a community focal point for aging issues and as an effective liaison to local, state, and federal resources for older adults and their families.

  • And by continuously striving to help its members remain independent and active in the community for as long as safely possible.

about us

Meals-on-Wheels Wise County provides fresh meal services to elderly homebound clients in Wise County. Our meal service enables seniors to enjoy a hot meal delivered to their place of residence, as well as the opportunity to interact with the volunteer bringing food to their door.  In many cases this is the only human interaction they have that day.

The meal typically consists of  a main course meat entre, potatoes or a pasta dish and a vegetable.  Also provided for each meal served is bread, milk or juice and a dessert.  As an added service for these homebound seniors we always provide a copy of the popular Wise County Messenger Update, helping these folk to stay plugged in to the community news headlines and public interest stories.

Meals are delivered directly to clients homes from Monday through Friday between 10:30 A.M. and 1:00 P.M.  Meals-on-Wheels also delivers frozen meals for special holiday meals as-well-as bad weather days.

A Registered Dietitian reviews our menus, which rotate every five weeks to insure variety.  Facts show that up to 75% of our clients' daily nutritional needs can be addressed by our services and we strive to exceed the minimum requirements with creatively designed meal plans.  The typical meal served is low in sugar and fat,  designed to be very acceptable for the majority of senior diet restrictions.

Meals-on-Wheels currently has routes serving Decatur, Bridgeport, Lake Bridgeport, Runaway Bay, Boyd, Paradise, Newark, Rhome and Cottondale. These routes are providing  Wise County homebound seniors with over 100 meals a day and cover over 312 miles across the community.
